Google is taking satellite connectivity to the next level with the Pixel 10 series. Unlike previous phones that limited satellite use to SOS messages or location sharing, the Pixel 10 lineup is breaking new ground by enabling WhatsApp audio and video calls over satellite. The feature officially goes live on August 28, coinciding with the phones’ shipping date.

WhatsApp Calls Without Internet or Mobile Network

The announcement came through a demo video posted on X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, a Pixel 10 user receives a WhatsApp call while the satellite icon flashes in the status bar, making it clear that the call was happening without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

This is a major step forward for satellite communication, moving it beyond emergency use into everyday connectivity.

Expanding Pixel’s Satellite Features

Earlier this week, Google expanded the Pixel 10’s satellite capabilities by adding:

• Live location sharing via Maps and Find My Hub

• Satellite SOS for emergencies

With WhatsApp calling now in the mix, the Pixel 10 is positioning itself as the most versatile satellite-powered smartphone to date.

Competition Still Playing Catch-Up

The update gives Google a strong advantage over rivals. Apple’s iPhones continue to restrict satellite usage to SOS alerts only, while Samsung’s Galaxy S25 allows limited text messaging through Snapdragon Satellite. Neither currently supports real-time calling apps like WhatsApp.

Limitations and Carrier Support

Google has cautioned that WhatsApp satellite calling will be available only through select carriers at launch, and users may face extra charges depending on their plans. It’s also uncertain whether WhatsApp will extend satellite support to text messaging later on.

Pixel Watch 4 Joins the Satellite Era

Alongside the Pixel 10, Google also unveiled satellite connectivity for emergencies on the new Pixel Watch 4 LTE. Running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip, the smartwatch can connect to a geostationary satellite network to summon help — making it the first wearable with direct satellite access.
