Apple to Close First Store in China Since Entering Market in 2008

In a rare move, Apple has announced the closure of its retail store in Dalian’s Parkland Mall, marking the tech giant’s first store shutdown in China since it launched its retail presence there over 15 years ago.

The decision, set to take effect on August 9, appears to be linked to the declining activity at Parkland Mall, where several premium brands—including Armani and Michael Kors—have already closed their outlets. On local social media platforms, residents have described the mall as experiencing a steady decline in footfall and retail engagement.

“Several key retailers have exited Parkland Mall, and based on that shift, we’ve decided to close our store,” said Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery. He added that employees from the closing location will retain opportunities within Apple at other branches.

This development comes amid ongoing economic challenges in China, where consumer demand remains subdued despite government-backed initiatives to encourage spending on electronics and other goods. While some incentive programs have triggered short-term interest, analysts believe their long-term impact remains limited.

Apple’s retreat from this location also highlights growing pressure in China’s smartphone market, which remains Apple’s second-largest revenue source after the United States. The company has faced six consecutive quarters of declining sales in the country. In 2023, Apple posted $66.95 billion in revenue from China, down from $74.2 billion in 2022.

Local competitors like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo have continued to chip away at Apple’s market share. According to Counterpoint Research, the company’s slice of China’s smartphone sales dropped from 17.9% in 2022 to 15.5% in 2023.

Despite the closure, Apple is not exiting Dalian entirely. The company will continue to operate its store in Olympia 66, another shopping center in the city. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing to open a new store in Shenzhen this month. With the new addition, the total number of Apple stores in China will remain steady at 58 by the end of 2025.
